Director John Wilson writes:
The best of
Pinter's plays are undoubtedly modern classics that continue to get under the
skin like few others. His spare use of language is masterful: every word is made
to count.
Pinter is also
much funnier than he is often given credit for. He is also, and it is a quality
that tends to be undervalued in his work, a marvellous chronicler of love and
the human heart.
Betrayal,
inspired by his own extra-marital affair with Joan Bakewell, is one of the
finest studies of adultery you are ever likely to encounter, and is given a
characteristically ingenious, bittersweet twist by the fact that Pinter tells
the story backwards, from the end of the affair to its beginning.
Our production
features some of our very finest actors, making it a must see. Vivien Goodwin,
last seen in my own production of The Memory of Water, (2002) is far too rarely
seen on our stage and makes a welcome return. Joining Vivien will be Mark
Slaughter, who was last seen in the The Rivals as Mr Acres, and adorns the cover
of our current seasons brochure (should have been me). Also returning to our
stage is Nick Gasson, Talking Heads (2000) and unforgettable as Alan Turing, in
Breaking the Code (1999). Finally we have Antonio Papa, making his debut at the
GWT, as an Italian Waiter.
Pinter has
never written anything simpler, sadder or funnier than Betrayal.
