This award winning play is described as a theatrical chronicle of the horrors of the First World War. It is, at one and the same time, a hugely entertaining show with popular music hall songs of the period and a backbone of telling wit and, by contrast, a very moving judgment on the futility of war. Within that mix we are treated to a warm and compassionate account of the life of the ordinary soldiers who gave their lives by the millions. One minute you will be singing along to familiar songs and the next you will shed a tear at the sights and sounds of the cruellest of wars.
First performed in 1963, and regularly revived over the last fifty years, it will be a very popular piece in 2014 and we are fortunate not only to be able to perform it at the GWT in the 100th anniversary year but also to be able to open at the Minack in Cornwall on the very date in August that Britain declared war on Germany.
