THE PLAY
“Had I as many souls as there be stars, I’d give them all for Mephistophilis”
The legendary tale of Faustus whose unquenchable desire for fame leads him to make a pact with the devil in return for extraordinary power and knowledge. Too late Faustus realises the true magnitude of the hellish price he must pay; the eternal damnation of his soul. In this Elizabethan tragedy, Marlowe uses some of the finest poetry ever written for the stage in illustrating mankind’s insatiable desire for greatness.

AUDITION PIECES
If you are not sure who to audition for, please look at the Chorus piece as this will best present your storytelling & vocal skills. Scripts will be provided in September but should you wish to start preparing, we are using the Dover Thrid Edition, text ‘A’.

Dr Faustus (MALE or FEMALE —must be performed as a man)
A widely successful yet dangerously ambitious scholar who sells his soul to the devil. He is both arrogant and mischievous yet clearly doubful about the decision he’s made — this is a great role with lots of emotion & personality that you can really get your teeth into. A large, weighty part with a lot of lines.
This role may require the actor to be lifted by other cast members.
1. P.13—14 “Tell me what is Lucifer thy Lord?” to “Till Mephistophilis return again.”
2. P.20 “Now tell me, what says Lucifer thy Lord” to “regent of perpetual night”
3. P.54—55 “Ah, Faustus…..” to “So that my soul may ascend to Heaven.”
Mephistophilis (FEMALE or MALE)
The manipulative demon summoned by Faustus who assists him in making a pact with Lucifer. He/she is a really interesting character as though he/she is a servant to Lucifer and take’s Faustus’s soul he/she also strongly advises Faustus against it. Both sympathetic and cunning.
Chorus (FEMALE or MALE)
The league of of unfortunate souls who’ve crawled from the pits of hell to help tell the story — the backbone of this production. They will play multiple speaking parts & constantly be on stage as devils, spirits, friars and more! Lead Chorus members will be chosen who present the required level both vocally and as storytellers. This role will require physical performance skills.
1. P.1 “Not marching now” to bottom of page
2. P.34 “When Faustus had with pleasure” to “see perform’d”
Please choose whichever speech you prefer.
