“This exceptional new romantic drama packs more into an hour or so than most manage in three” The Telegraph

“a singular astonishment, at once eloquent and mysterious but which nonetheless articulates something that touches an audience as real” The New Yorker

Constellations is a play about free will and friendship; it’s about quantum multiverse theory, love and honey… One relationship. Infinite possibilities.

Roland is a beekeeper. Marianne is a quantum cosmologist. Both meet at a barbecue. Constellations is the story of their relationship, told across various parallel universes. To quote Marianne: “In the quantum multiverse, every choice, every decision you’ve ever made and never made exists in an unimaginably vast ensemble of parallel universes” (or Roland “this is genuinely turning me on”). The absolute genius of Constellations is that we see the course of this relationship playing out several times over, with different outcomes, with every shifting scene representing a change in universe. Imagine if life did exist in a multiverse – every possible outcome that could befall a couple who meet in all universes, happy or heart-breaking, will.

This beautiful play explores how even the smallest change in our lives can dramatically alter the course we take. It is a spellbinding exploration of love, science and the infinite possibility for heartbreak or for hope.

At only 70 minutes long, this small but perfectly formed winner of the Evening Standard’s Best Play award offers a real acting challenge for two cast members and a delightful evening’s drama for our audiences.

CHARACTERS

Real commitment will be required by the actors – these roles require verbal and physical dexterity, some dancing and even a requirement to learn a fair amount of sign language. Neither leaves the stage.

Character age is far less important than casting a strong pairing with real chemistry. Instinctively I feel that Roland and Marianne are in their 30s, but getting this spot on is not essential.

Marianne – intellectual, quirky, strong, goofy, good-humoured, sensitive, accurate portrayal of battling a brain tumour perhaps the role’s greatest challenge.

Roland – kind, caring, likeable, laid back, earnest

AUDITION PIECES (UPDATED PAGE REFERENCES ON 6.5.19):

Both: page 6 “I play football with Tom” to page 8 “Bummer.”

Both: (this is an opportunity to play a similar scene twice and show subtle differences) page 18 “Alright?” to page 21 “there’s no rush.”

NOTE: Do not work from the Faber and Faber published edition, we have a PDF version of the new approved script for Constellations which can be issued to you by Ben – please contact him to obtain, thanks.
